6-day: Canoe Building & 2-week: Rangeley Rowboat Construction

2-Day Skills Workshops: April 25 – 26, June 13 – 14, August 8 – 9, September 26 – 27

The students will work together to learn the steps of building a canoe using cove + bead cedar strip/epoxy boat building technique (Staple & Stapleless), including hands-on individual fiberglassing instruction in a weekend class/workshop with hands on learning! It is intended to get you comfortable with the building process so that you have the confidence and skill to proceed on your own either from a kit or from plans. No prior woodworking or boatbuilding experience required!

1-Day Fiberglassing & Varnish Class – May 31

Each students will learn about epoxy, fiberglassing and varnishing in all the stages of application in cedar strip & plywood boatbuilding construction, including creating filet, and applying bias cloth in a fiberglassing demonstration, and learning varnish application techniques. Each student will experience individual instruction in fiberglassing and varnishing so that you have the skill and confidence to create effective fillets, prep and fiberglass your boat including applying bias cloth successfully, plus varnishing prep and application, when building either from a kit or from plans. No prior woodworking or boatbuilding experience required!

6-Day Canoe Building Class at WoodenBoat School – July 6 – 12

Working together, our class will build two beautiful designs from Newfound Woodworks: an 11’9″ solo “Otter” canoe and a 16’1″ tandem “Abenaki” canoe. Each student will learn by hands-on experience in building, epoxy, fiberglassing and varnishing in all the stages of application in cove & bead cedar strip boatbuilding construction. Each student will experience individual instruction in fiberglassing and varnishing so that you have the skill and confidence to create effective fillets, prep and fiberglass your boat including applying bias cloth successfully, plus varnishing prep and application. Learn the skills and tips and hands on knowledge for success when building either from a kit or from plans. No prior woodworking or boatbuilding experience required! Both boats are available for sale/raffle at the end of the class.

2-week Rangeley 15′ Rowboat Building Class – August 31 thru September 13

Working together, our class will build two beautiful designs from Newfound Woodworks: a Rangeley 15′ rowboat. Each student will learn by hands-on experience in building, epoxy, fiberglassing and varnishing in all the stages of application in cove & bead cedar strip boatbuilding construction. Each student will experience individual instruction in fiberglassing and varnishing so that you have the skill and confidence to create effective fillets, prep and fiberglass your boat including applying bias cloth successfully, plus varnishing prep and application. Learn the skills and tips and hands on knowledge for success when building either from a kit or from plans. No prior woodworking or boatbuilding experience required! This boat will be available for sale/raffle at the end of the class.

6-Day Build Your Own Stitch-n-Glue Workshop ~ November 3 – 8

We Brought back our Stitch-n-Glue workshop! The students will learn how to build their own Stitch-n-Glue Canoe or Kayak plywood/epoxy building technique, including hands-on individual fiberglassing instruction in a weekend long class/workshop with hands on learning! No prior woodworking or boatbuilding experience required!

We also offer private boatbuilding classes!  We have quietly provided private instruction to boat builders over the years.  This is growing more popular for individuals, couples, friends and families who simply desire the individual or private group instruction of our professional boat builders. Attendees have enjoyed and expressed how they benefited by learning their boatbuilding skills from Newfound Woodworks, saying that the experience has helped them to confidently build a boat that they are very proud of, and how the personal experience benefiting from our 41 years of our award-winning boatbuilding has taken the worry out of the mysteries of building, and made their boatbuilding an enjoyable experience.

You are able to customize your private hands-on workshop to learn or advance your personal boatbuilding skills experience by choosing how many in your party, the amount of hours/days, learning the overall hands-on skills to just concentrating on specific aspects of the construction. (Example: Private fiberglassing or varnishing skills, installation skills, part or all boatbuilding skills, etc.) Whatever you need for hands-on learning to gain the knowledge and experience to have you leaving with the confidence and skill to be successful. The tuition is reflective of the customization, and covers the days requested, facility, instructor, pre-class preparation, use of tools, materials and disposable supply costs.

A personalized boatbuilding workshop for 1 or 2 week long class can be for one individual, a family or a group, working together building one boat – learning each facet of the build using a Newfound Woodworks kit. The tuition covers the facility, instructor, pre-class preparation, use of tools, and disposable supply costs. The kit cost covers all of the boatbuilding materials to build a complete boat. (Materials from the kit that is not used in class including items/supplies left over, will go home with the person who paid for the kit.)
